This morning the Sparrows, along with their 4th grade partners, took part in a service project. This years theme for the MLK Day of Service is Truth, Love, Action. To go with this theme, the pairs made cards for the middle schoolers. Before we began this project, we had a brief discussion about Martin Luther King Jr. and the importance of helping others. We spoke about kindness, what it means to give back and to help and lift those up around us.
The Sparrows love getting to be with their buddies, and their buddies feel the same way! Friends sat around the tables writing and drawing, all the while laughing and conversing with one another. It was a great way to start off the day.
After the 4th grade left, the Sparrows had snack. Today's snack was bagels and cream cheese, and orange slices.
Following snack we had choice time. Friends used their binoculars to look for their safari animals.
Later on, all friends put on their binoculars and set out on a safari walkabout. Friends looked for animals, along with letters, numbers and patterns! On our way to check out at the office, friends had already spotted a zebra in one of the 3rd grade rooms, and a lion in the hallway.
Friends were SO excited when they spotted the different maps displayed around the school, pointing to Africa with great joy.
On our way through upper school, we bumped into some friends' loved ones, as well as the beloved Bear Witness.
On our journey back to lower school to the Sparrow classroom, Anne stopped us and asked if we would like to join a 6th grade math lesson! The Sparrows entered the room with great excitement. The middle schoolers were learning about ratios, and we got to be a part of the problem! One of the questions Anne asked was how many Sparrows are there to 6th graders. One Sparrow counted 11 Sparrows in total for today, and 15 6th graders. Then Anne asked her students, how many teachers to students in total in the classroom.
Before leaving, one of the Sparrows asked if they could tell the big kids their name. The Sparrows went around saying their name, and all of the 6th graders greeted them with a warm hello. The Sparrows loved visiting this middle school math classroom that they asked if they could come back. Anne said that we are welcome anytime!
Thank you, Anne and to all of the members of our community who helped to make this mini excursion a fun learning experience for the Sparrows.
Ask your Sparrow what they saw on their safari trip.
