This morning, the Sparrows entered the library, returned their books and sat down to listen to a read aloud. Michelle read Cora Cooks Pancit by Dorina K. Lazo Gilmore.

Cora helps her mom make pancit, a Filipino dish, and this time Cora is very excited because she gets to do the "grown up" jobs. Usually, Cora's older siblings help to make the dish but since they are out, it is just Cora and her mother cooking. At the end of the story, Cora is very proud of herself as she shares the dish with her whole family, and they learn that Cora did the "grown up" jobs.

Looking through books to check-out.

After library, we returned to our classroom for choice and snack. A little while after, friends cleaned up and sat down for morning meeting. Today we read Little Blue Little Yellow by Leo Lionni. This is a sweet story about two best friends, Little Blue and Little Yellow. One day the two hugged each other so tightly that they became green! Their parents could not tell them a part until the two friends started to cry, and out of the green came yellow and blue tears. From this book, friends took away that when you mix blue and yellow together you get green.

Ask your Sparrow what two colors mixed together make green.

The Cardinals joined us again for part of the day today. Together we did some literacy work. As a whole group, the Sparrows have been practicing writing and sounding out uppercase letters that have big and small lines. Today, as a group, we began practicing uppercase letters with curves. The teachers tried to see if they could trick the Sparrows and Cardinals, but these savvy students could not be fooled. Friends worked on the letters C, O, Q, G, D, P and B. Friends wrote the letters, named their lines and curves, made the letter sound, and then came up with a word that began with that letter.

Next, friends decided to turn the tables and see if they could trick the teachers and their friends. A friend would go up to the board, and the rest of the group would close their eyes as the friend wrote a letter on the board. When it was time to open our eyes, friends would guess what letter the friend wrote.

We even decided to take it a step further by writing a few words. We sounded out "sat, mat" and "tree, be."
Nice work, Sparrows and Cardinals!

Outdoor fun on this Fall day.
