It's just the beginning!

Day 1
Meet the Sparrows

During our first morning meeting of the year, we sang a song to get to know one another's names, and friends shared thoughts and ideas about themselves, and what we should do this year. A reoccurring idea was to bake chocolate chip cookies!

We read First Day Jitters. Friends gave the book either a thumbs up or jumping moose ears (which means they REALLY liked it). Friends were surprised to find out that it was the teacher who was nervous for the first day of school. We talked about what it means to be nervous, and described it as sometimes a worried, scared or excited feeling that can make your tummy feel like it has butterflies inside of it. We discussed that it is okay to feel this way, that it happens to all people, and goes away after a little bit.

The Sparrows were introduced to the classroom kindness jar, and a friend already put in the first pompom on the first day!

When a teacher sees or hears a random act of kindness from a Sparrow or Sparrows, they will get to place a pompom in the jar. Once the jar is filled, the Sparrows will get to decide how they would like the celebrate this awesome feat!

If a Sparrow witnesses an act of kindness, we will write down the "kindness" and display it in our room. Our goal right now is to get to 100 acts of kindness!

Books and puzzles!

Exploring together on the playground!

Quite a few Sparrows expressed great interest in painting during our morning meeting conversation. We put out watercolor as an option during choice time and friends got to work!

Day 2

Keisha joined us in the classroom for our first music class. To begin, Keisha introduced herself and clapped the sounds in her name. Friends took turns saying their names, and clapping the number of sounds they heard together.
Each music class begins with singing the hello song, Jambo. The Sparrows learned that jambo means hello in Swahili.
Friends enjoyed the music and movement activities, and are looking forward to going to the music room next week!

A little later on, friends worked on painting their pictures frames. It was so neat to see the Sparrows plan and take their time painting their frames.
If you have not yet sent in a 4x6 family photo, please do so, so we can start displaying the pictures around our room!

Day 3

To start the day, we went to lower school assembly. During assembly, we met some new friends and sang songs with Rich, Raji and Keisha.

Today we had a group snack of pita, hummus, and bananas.

A little while later, the Sparrows went to tour the school. We stopped by to say hello to Tricia, and for friends to see where to take the attendance.

We peeked into the library, art room, and music room.

We walked through the middle and upper schools, and saw Rich on the way!

Amy invited us into the upper school art room, and showed us some of the work her students do.

Some Sparrows presented their collages today. Friends enjoyed seeing each others creations and making connections.

It truly has been a wonderful first few days in the Sparrow classroom. We are super excited for what the year has in store!

Have a great weekend!
