While drawing this morning, one of the Sparrow's expressed to a friend that they do not know how to draw triangles. From this conversation we thought...why not learn how to draw triangles and other shapes!

During morning meeting we read Shapes All Around Us. Friends read about all sorts of shapes, their attributes, similarities and differences. While reading, friends identified shapes' properties and pointed out what items in our world are certain shapes, such as a slice of pizza is a triangle.

Afterwards, while munching on snack, Sparrows started noticing different shapes all around us! Friends observed that our classroom clock is a circle, the graham crackers they were eating either made a square or rectangle, and the bottom of the plant holder on the table is a square. Friends are now determined to find hexagon!

For right now, we are focusing on triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, ovals, hearts, diamonds and stars. Friends identified the shapes as follows:

Triangle- 3 sides
Square- 4 sides and 4 corners
Rectangle- Kind of like a square but 2 of the sides are short and 2 of the sides are long
Circle- Has curves
Oval- Stretched out circle
Heart- 2 curves and a point at the bottom
Diamond- 4 sides, 2 triangles stuck together
Star- 5 points

Following our group circle, friends entered into choice and chose between making shapes with popsicle sticks, geoboards, maganatiles, and dramatic play.

Friends created squares and triangles out of popsicle sticks to make houses.

Working on shape recognition and fine motor skills!

Friends conversed in an organized and respectful manner with one another to plan a picnic.

The other day, Dylan shared his collage with the class!

Ask your Sparrow if they can find any of the shapes we discussed today around the house!
