It was nice checking out new books to bring back to our classroom!
Ask your Sparrow about the book they checked out.
Today friends participated in a math workshop with a focus on patterns. This is a topic that the Sparrows have discussed, observed and practiced a lot in the past month or so. To begin, we gathered in a circle on the rug to share examples of patterns. The teachers tried to trick the Sparrows, but friends worked as a team to decide whether it was a pattern or not.
Soon after our discussion on the front rug, friends moved over to the rug with the SmartBoard to watch a short video clip about patterns. Along with the brief exercise in our circle, this helped to get friends' brains moving and thinking in another way for different ways and ideas to create patterns.
Next, it was time for the Sparrows to put their skills to the test. We set up three different centers for friends to rotate throughout.
At the front table, friends used dotters to create their own patterns.
At the middle table, friends used unifix cubes to create a pattern. Before a friend went on to color the pattern they created, they raised their hand for a pattern check. Once good to go, friends went forward with the next step by using crayons to color in the grid squares that corresponded to the color way they created.
At the back table, friends used counting bears and boards to create a pattern already set forth. Some of the pattern cards had one, two or three colors. Friends had to match the colors and sizes of the different bears to complete the pattern.
Friends enjoyed this workshop very much! Even once completed at their stations, friends asked to keep going or if they could have another grid to make more patterns. We will continue to identify and create our own patterns throughout the year. It will be interesting to watch as friends' ideas become more concrete and complex. Soon we will start to examine and explore patterns in nature.
Ask your Sparrow to create and/or find a pattern!
Following our workshop, we went outside for outdoor play. When we came back in, friends engaged in choice time, where some friends continued to work on making their binoculars for our upcoming safari trips and adventures!
