The Sparrows began their Monday in library. Friends returned their books and sat down to listen to a read aloud. Michelle read We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. The Sparrows helped Michelle read the story but making the sound effects of nature, such as "swishy swashy" for swaying grass.
By request, Michelle read a second story! Friends listened to Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. Again, friends interacted with the story by following along and making different sounds.
After library, friends came back to the classroom to finish up with morning choice. Some Sparrows chose to look at and read their checked out library books. Soon, we cleaned up for snack and had morning meeting.
Today, Lincoln read our daily schedule, went over the calendar and hundreds chart.
Henry, who is in charge of attendance this week, counted the responses to the Question of the Day. Today's question:
What is a group of hippos called?
Answer: A pod
Once friends did their jobs, we gathered back in a circle to read African Elephant The World's Largest Land Mammal.
We read the first few pages of the book and learned these facts:
1. African elephants are the largest animals on land
2. A male African elephant weighs as much as three white rhinoceroses
3. African elephants live in grasslands, forests, and by rivers
4. Elephants flap their ears to keep cool
The Sparrows were then presented with the question, "How do humans cool down?"
Sparrow responses were...
-Drink water
-Go in the air condition
-A fan
-Go in the pool
-Go in the ocean
Today we began creating new pictures for our art gallery. To go along with our savanna study, friends will be creating a savanna sunset with their animal's silhouette. We looked at pictures on the Smartboard of African savanna sunsets. Friends noticed the colors purple, yellow, red and orange in the sunsets.
Soon, friends rotated throughout painting the backgrounds of their pictures. With this, friends practiced fine motor control, as well as planning and attending to their work.
Friends used techniques they learned in art, such as drying the hair on the sides of the glass so to not soak the paper or have a bad hair day, and to make their paint brushes dance lightly on the paper like a ballerina.
Ask your Sparrow what colors they used to paint their sunset on the savanna.
