Shape Wand Walk

This morning the Sparrows opened up shop!
Friends took turns managing the cash register, being customers and workers. One friend scanned produce and other items, while another helped bag the groceries.

Friends also took time to draw pictures using crayons and stencils.
Make sure to check your Sparrow's mailbox for artwork!

Some Sparrows also chose to manipulate rubber bands on the geoboards to create shapes and designs.

Shortly after setting up shop, one Sparrow chose to add in a lemonade stand!
"$2.99 for a big size!"

Friends stretching for "dance class."

Between choice and snack, we had morning meeting. We read Up in the Leaves by Shira Boss and illustrated by Jamey Christoph.

Ask your Sparrow to find the spine of a book.

Last week, during our math workshop on shapes, the Sparrows created shape wands. Today friends collected their wands, lined up, and went off to sign out at the office to go on our nature walk. In the office, we were greeted by a surprise guest. It was Polly!

Before we even began the walk, friends found shapes in the office! Rectangles on the table and tissue boxes and a square on the filing cabinet.

Friends, with their shape wands in tow, looked for shapes in nature around our AFS campus. Friends spotted rectangles in doors, the sidewalk, signs, and circles in poles, around trees, and on cars. Keep reading to find more shapes the Sparrows spotted!

After our wand walk, we went to the playground to continue our outdoor time. Friends kept with our shape exploration, and discovered more shapes on the playground.

Friends took out the tents and built a campsite, complete with a campfire and all!

I wonder where the Sparrows went...

Paper, Scissors, Glue!

Early morning sillies.

During morning meeting, the Sparrows read Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain. The story tells us about how animals and humans survived a drought. Friends noticed the repetition and rhyming in the story. After reading, friends shared their thoughts on the book and answered comprehension questions.
Ask your Sparrow what a drought is.

In Art class today, friends added to the work they created last week. This was a great way for friends to see and understand art as a process. The Sparrows used precut paper shapes to make their very own designs, particularly houses, buildings and trees. Friends glued the different shape pieces onto the paper, layering rectangles, squares, ovals and more. The Sparrows loved this activity! Friends were attentive in finding the right shapes for their art work and took care of details as well.

Ask your Sparrow what they named their picture in art today!
