Caterpillars, African necklaces and E for elephant!

On Tuesday, Friends enjoyed a fun math activity. Teachers gave each Sparrow the head and the body of a caterpillar. First Friends had to glue those pieces on a sheet of paper. Each body part of the caterpillar had a number. Then Friends had to cut legs, count them and match them with the number shown on the body, and then glue the legs onto the caterpillar.

On Wednesday, Friends started to decorate African necklaces. For inspiration, we used the smart board to look at a variety of colorful necklaces. We learned that the necklaces were crafted in unique ways depending on which part of Africa they were made. Friends were amazed to see all the little beads that the African people used to make one necklace. Sparrows were discussing how long it would take to make one beautiful African necklace.

In art class, Friends colored a piece of silk using dye paint. Amanda explained that this kind of paint has a very liquid consistency so it would not be necessary to press hard on the silk. Sparrows were in awe when the brush touched the silk and the color diffused through the fabric quickly. It was an explosion of color!

Today Friends learned about the letter E. They built the letter E with blocks and then listened to the book "Elmer The Elephant" by David Mackee. In addition to these activities they listened to a song about the letter E. Then the teachers gave each Sparrow a few supplies. Sparrows were given: a piece of construction paper, one long paper strip and three smaller strips. Friends then assembled the letter E by glueing the strips onto the given piece of construction paper. Once that was done Friends got to glue elephant ears, trunks and googly eyes to their letter.

Ask your Sparrow a word that starts with the letter E.

Dress up day!
